Atlantic

The Electronic Text Centre at UNB Libraries has supported the distribution of academic journals in digitized formats since its inception in 1996. The increase in numbers of journals requesting this support has been slow but steady; the past year has seen the steepest increase, with ten journals requesting not only distribution services but online journal management functionality as well.

Costing for this support is worked out with each individual journal depending on the journal’s requirements. Journals choose from a menu of four production models:

  • hosting of the Open Journal System (OJS) for journal management;
  • hosting and XML light markup based on the Érudit data model;
  • hosting and XML detailed markup;
  • hosting and XML markup based on other data models

Costs range from $500 to ~$1,800 per year, a cost based on two issues per year (and with $500 being the minimum for site maintenance, alone). Back catalog digitization is also supported, and the Centre has been digitizing back catalogues for several journals.

A collaborative relationship with academic journal editors is a fundamental feature of journal workflows. Editors maintain control over key decisions such as levels of open access and subscription bases; editors can also select multiple access points through disseminating with a number of other aggregating services. A collaborative relationship with Synergies nodes is also a fundamental feature of Synergies developments. For example, UNB is working with SFU to investigate expanding OJS functionality with aggregators in mind.

Finally, a major component of the Atlantic Synergies node’s regional governance structure is a Journal Advisory Committee, the main directive of which is to identify ways academic journals can take advantage of the infrastructure Synergies was funded to build. This committee will comprise a representative group of scholarly journal editors; the Synergies Project Manager (Erik Moore); representatives from the lead institution (UNB); and two representatives elected by the Board of Directors. Dr. Margaret Conrad, a Tier I CRC Chair in Atlantic Canada Studies, will act as committee Chair. This committee will encourage regional journal participation, and will focus on best practices (business plans and publishing models), open access, and copyright, among other issues.

British Columbia

The Synergies BC node provides support for journals in several ways. The SFU Library coordinates the development of the Public Knowledge Project (PKP) software suite. This includes the Open Journals System (OJS); Open Conference System (OCS); the PKP metadata harvester; and several new modules under development. This open source software is readily available for downloading from the PKP Website. Documentation, instructional videos, links to the PKP support forum, and information on PKP's partnerships and related initiatives are also available on the website.

Through the combined resources of the SFU Library and SFU's Canadian Centre for Studies in Publishing, the Synergies BC node offers the full complement of online journal publishing support. The SFU Library provides several hosting and support options on its servers for journals. The details, support agreement, and costs are available at the Software @ SFU Library website. For Synergies-eligible journals, the hosting fee is waived until Dec. 31, 2008. SFU's Canadian Centre for Studies in Publishing — CCSP Press — provides journal publishing support including layout, editing, and production as well as non-technical assistance for those transitioning to online format or creating a new online journal.

SFU Library also provides support for academic digitization and repository projects such as the Community Health Online Digital Archive Research Resource (CHODARR); the Mai '68 events archive; or the 2005 conference papers of the Digital Games Research Association.
