Indigenous Agency and Mineral Development: A Cautionary Note

Abstract

Introduction Across the world, Indigenous peoples, encapsulated withina variety of political systems and embracing a diversity of cultures, share acommon material reality. People who are Indigenous are much more likelyto be economically disadvantaged than their non-Indigenous counterparts.2Social and economic indicators from around the world confirm the highrates of poverty, unemployment, poor educational outcomes, ill health,family violence, and high rates of suicide and incarceration that are prominentin Indigenous communities.3 Indigenous peoples represent the mostsocially and economically marginalized populations around the globe.4 InAustralia, Indigenous people are recognized as the most disadvantaged groupwithin Australian society.
